HOw to relieve pain with deep tissue massage
Deep tissue massage focuses on the deeper layers of muscles, tendons, and connective tissue. This technique is ideal for addressing chronic tension, injuries, and areas of restricted movement.
- Slow, focused strokes
- Direct pressure on tight muscles
- Friction movements across the muscle grain
Deep tissue massage can break down adhesions, which are bands of painful tissue. It can relieve pain and restore movement. Massage also reduces inflammation and improves circulation.

Full Body or Focus Areas?
The format of a deep tissue session with me changes depending upon your personal session goals. These goals can vary with your body status and the activities in which you engage.
For example, a technology worker often spends long periods in front of a computer. They commonly need to tackle pain in the shoulders, neck, arms, and chest. Those become the focus areas of a session. Alternatively, powerlifters and bodybuilders exercise many parts of the body. These persons will want a full body session to cover all of their pain and stiffness issues.
Safe deep tissue work requires proper warming of muscles before engaging them with deep pressure. I warm muscles with a variety of techniques to increase blood circulation and oxygen flow. Performing these techniques take session time which in turn lengthens the overall appointment.
Consequently, a sixty-minute deep tissue session can’t satisfy full body issues. It will include vigorous Swedish massage over the entire body and deep tissue techniques for the client’s desired focus areas. Ninety minutes to two hours are necessary to finish deep tissue work on the entire body.
Does Deep Tissue Hurt?
Several clients have expressed concerns about the risk of feeling pain during or after a deep tissue session. In some cases, they assume that it is a necessary evil as in “no pain, no gain.” Other clients have had unfortunate experiences where they were bruised or injured by a body worker.
Properly done, deep tissue work should not result in injury. While it can cause some discomfort during the session, the client should not feel pain. Licensed practitioners mitigate the potential for injury by selecting client-appropriate techniques. Additionally, adjusting pressure to the client’s comfort level is essential for a successful session. More importantly, conducting an adequate intake interview identifies risk factors including certain chronic illnesses, medications, and surgeries. Adhering to these practices is crucial for ensuring the safety of clients when employing deep tissue techniques.
Deep tissue massage is particularly beneficial for those with sports injuries, postural tension, or repetitive strain. It can also help anyone experiencing chronic discomfort or soreness. Come see me and relieve pain with deep tissue massage.
